Remento review: what it costs, and what the book is like
We used it. Here is every price, and what actually arrives.
We make a competing product. Ethos is ours. Read this the way you would read any review written by a competitor. Every number we give for Remento is linked to a page Remento publishes, listed at the foot of this article, so you can check all of it yourself.
We have used Remento. The screenshots below are our own account, taken on 25 August 2026. Where something is what we saw rather than what they publish, we say so.
The short answer
Remento sends one prompt a week. He taps a link, talks, and Remento writes up what he said. At the end you arrange those stories into a hardcover, and the printed book carries QR codes so you can hear him say it.
It is good, and the book is the nicest object anyone in this market prints. What you get is a fine collection of separate stories. It is not one story that runs from his childhood to now.
On money: both start at $99. Remento's $99 comes back every year until the book is done. Ours is $99 one time, and that is the end of it.
What Remento costs
The Remento pricing guide and their FAQ are the two pages that carry the prices. There is no pricing page on their main site, so those are the two to read. Here is everything they publish.
$99 to start. That buys one storyteller account, unlimited collaborators, a year of prompts, and one hardcover book up to 200 pages, shipped free in the US.
Then it renews. Their pricing guide gives two renewal prices: $99 a year or $12 a month. One renewal covers every storyteller on the account.
A longer book is $30 more. The 200 pages the $99 includes can go up to 380 pages for another $30.
Extra copies are $69, or $99. This is the one worth reading twice, because a lot of families buy several. Their FAQ prices them at $69 each up to 200 pages, or $99 each for a 201 to 380 page book. So the longer book costs $30 more to make and $30 more for every single copy after that.
A second storyteller is $99, once. Their pricing guide says each additional storyteller is a one time $99 fee, and that it includes a full year of access plus one book credit, and the one renewal then covers them all. If both your parents are telling their stories, that is a fair way to price it.
The e-book is $49.99. That is their price for the digital version, bought separately.
The paper extras. A Remento Workbook is $20 and the Family Conversation Cards are $19.99, each with $5 shipping, per the same guide.
And a guarantee. They offer a 30 day money back guarantee on initial purchases. Ours is 30 days too, so nobody wins that one.
What that adds up to for a real family
Say his life runs to 300 pages, and you want four copies, one for each of the children. Using Remento's own published prices: $99 to start, $30 to take the book past 200 pages, and three more copies at $99 each because the book is over 200 pages. That is $426, and the $99 renews next year if the book is not finished. That is our math on their numbers, not a price they quote.
The same four books from us is $237, with 400 pages included and nothing to renew. Five copies cost $237 too. That is not a typo. At four copies you pay for three, and the fifth book is free.
What Ethos costs
$99, once, for a hardcover. Five copies bought together are $237, which is $47.40 a book, and one more ordered after it is finished is $69. A single copy costs $3.95 to ship and two or more ship free. There is no plan and no renewal date. If his story takes six months instead of three, the price does not move.
The Remento book itself
This is the part Remento does best. Their own print guide gives an 8 by 10 inch hardcover on double-thick paper, printed in color. Their help center says the same size, adds that shipping is free within the United States, and puts delivery at roughly 21 business days from the day you order. Call it a month, and plan around it if the book is a present.
The book also carries QR codes, the little squares you point a phone at. Remento's own page invites you to scan them and hear your storyteller's voice. Our book has no QR codes. Every recording is yours to download and keep, but it is not printed on the page, and pointing a phone at a paragraph and hearing him say it is a lovely thing that we do not do.
On length: 200 pages come with the $99, and $30 more takes it to 380. Ours goes to 400 with nothing further to pay. So a very long life costs a Remento family $30 plus $30 on every extra copy, and costs an Ethos family nothing.

How Remento actually works
Their how it works page sets it out plainly. It is a simple product. There are hundreds of prompts written by their experts, and the family can suggest questions and vote on favorites. One prompt goes to the storyteller each week, by text or email, with no app to install and no password. He taps it and talks, in audio or on video. Their pricing guide puts each recording at up to 30 minutes.

Does the next question follow what he just said?
Once, yes. Remento's help center says that when a storyteller finishes recording, Remento writes one follow-up question from what he just shared. He can answer it or ignore it. Their recording page says only one follow-up can be answered per recording.
So the honest way to put the difference is a matter of degree. With Remento the week's prompt comes off a list the family picked from, and one follow-up comes off the recording. With Ethos there is no list. Every question after the first is built from what he has already told us, all the way through.
A named third party sums up the printed result more bluntly than we will. EverMemory's review of Remento says: "It captures stories. It doesn't write books." That is their sentence, not ours. We think it is fair.
Remento reviews and ratings
Remento reviews are good. On 26 August 2026, Remento's Trustpilot page showed 4.8 out of 5 from 1,722 reviews, with 91 percent of them five stars and 2 percent one star. That is an excellent score. People who buy Remento tend to be happy with it. We are reporting the score, not summarizing what individual reviewers wrote. The link is there if you want to read them.
Some context on how that score was collected. The same page says Remento claimed the profile in November 2022, that the company asks its customers to review it, that it holds a paid Trustpilot subscription, and that it has replied to 100 percent of its negative reviews and usually within a day. Asking happy customers for reviews is normal practice. Replying to every complaint is a good sign, not a bad one. We are telling you the conditions the number was collected under, not suggesting the number is wrong.
Where Remento beats us
- 1. The printed book is better made
- 8 by 10 inches, full color, on double-thick paper, per their own print guide. Ours is 7 by 10 on thick coated paper. Theirs is the wider book and the better one to look at photographs in. If the object on the coffee table is what matters most to you, buy theirs.
- 2. The QR codes
- Point a phone at the page and hear him. Paper cannot do that on its own and our book does not do it at all. For a grandchild in twenty years, that may be the whole point.
- 3. Video
- Their how it works page says he can record in audio or video. If seeing his face and his hands moving as he talks matters more to you than the writing, they have it and we do not.
- 4. Free shipping in the US
- Their FAQ says shipping in the United States is included in the purchase price, and their pricing guide says the book credit the $99 includes ships free in the US. We charge $3.95 on a single copy, and only two or more ship free.
- 5. Unlimited collaborators, and a monthly renewal
- Any number of family members can join a Remento project and suggest prompts at no extra cost. And when the year is up, they let you keep it running at $12 a month instead of $99 at once. Note that is a renewal price, not a way in: starting Remento is $99 either way. Our contributors are capped at 50. Each of ours is interviewed rather than asked to suggest a question, which is a different trade, not a better one.
What Ethos does differently
He does not pick a prompt off a list. We interview him over two to three months, and every question after the first is built from what he already told us. One story opens the next, so he keeps going without being asked to. There is no timer and no target, and a session averages 50 minutes. Nobody is on the call. Software asks the questions and he answers out loud, in his own time.
The process is biographer-designed. People who write memoirs for a living decided the shape of it, and software runs it. What comes back is his life in order, from childhood to now, in chapters, not a stack of separate answers.
One thing we will be straight about, because everyone in this market is loose about it. Nobody at Ethos reads the finished book. There is no editor and no proofreader. Software shapes what he said into chapters and keeps his voice. What we do instead is pull every name and every place we heard into one list and send it to you to check before anything is printed, because a misspelled maiden name is the mistake a family notices and a computer does not.

That is about a month, and it is worth knowing if you are buying against a birthday or Christmas. They do ship to a list of other countries, including Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, for an extra fee they do not publish.

One of them does. Remento publishes a library of hundreds of prompts. The family suggests questions and votes on favorites, and one prompt is sent to the storyteller each week. Their help center says that after he finishes a recording, Remento writes one follow-up question from what he just said, and he can answer it or skip it. It is one follow-up per recording. With Ethos that is not one step, it is the whole method. A computer listens to what he says, and every question after the first is built from it.
